Prior Organizational Change Work

As Dean of the Faculty of Science (= College of Science), I helped lead UBC's Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative. Over the past decade, UBC's Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative has significantly improved student learning for more than 15,000 students enrolled in large undergraduate science courses through the adoption of the most effective, evidence-based science education practices.

How ASCN Can Contribute to my Work

I am keenly interested in efforts at U.S. and Canadian institutions to improve the way we teach undergraduate science and mathematics (and STEM more broadly). My experience at UBC has taught me that these improvements require significant cultural change, and I would value hearing different perspectives on how best to lead/support culture change.

How I Can Contribute to ASCN

At UBC, a large public research university, we have systemically changed the way we teach undergraduate science classes through the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative. I would expect to contribute by sharing our experiences at UBC in encouraging faculty to adopt better ways of enhancing student learning in STEM courses and in changing our institutional "culture".
