Creating an integrated dataset for Long Island Sound using USGS data and the Fledermaus iView3D free viewer

Erin Heffron and Matt Arsenault
Topic: Exploring Long Island Sound via geospatial data

Description

Create a 3D scene with all available data for New York. We think this datset can be used for many activities. Some ideas that could be developed:

-Location of contaminated sediment samples
-Changing shorelines/sea level rise
-Beach noursishment projects
-Glacial history
-Paleoshorelines

Goals

Our goal is to provide the data in easily useable formats so that teachers can focus on developing lesson plans and not on trying to get the data to work. Then they will be free to explore:

What can be learned from geospatial data........
Concepts of high and low resolution (sampling, sample size)
Navigation
Data collection!!!
Physics of data collection--sounds waves in water
Limitations of information---ex. sediment samples vs. generalized sediment type maps

Assessment

-We will provide contact information for users of the dataset; contact from teachers would be a positive sign that the dataset is being used.

References

Anything to back up the datsets:
-integration of other data
-"backup" information; ex. for contaminated sediment sample locations, EPA reports, etc documenting the sites would be a good addition
-any news info, media, etc. related to Long Island Sound
